Multi-Tasking and Being Present

I have huge lists of to-do’s, must-do’s and would love-to-do’s. The lists grow, but things hardly get crossed off. I’ve been quite discouraged lately. I found the times I was getting the most frustrated were the pauses throughout the days.

For me, the biggest pause, is bath time. I was using bath time to catch up on reading. But I was doing my girls and myself a disservice. I was missing out on their cute antics, and I wasn’t fully enjoying my books.

The opportunity cost is high when you’re raising little ones.

But, if I just ‘sit there’ during bath time, I’m bored, and tend to wander around. Again, not exactly spending time with my girls.

So, this week I tried something new. I placed all my unfinished projects into a bucket, and placed it near the bathroom. It’s not pretty, but it’s changed my bath time enjoyment level for everyone.

The projects don’t require much thinking on my behalf and can be abandoned in a moment and picked back up. I’ve done 4 parts of 4 projects this week. Today, I grated soap for the homemade body wash we use.

Grating Soap

Maybe it’s silly, but I felt accomplished, and I didn’t even finish the task. And most importantly, I was wholly there for my girls.

And, later I’ll be so grateful I don’t have an entire bar to grate.
